we got stopped in michigan by the DOT **** for being overlength, than he started on the racing for money deal, I can handle that, but isnt there an exemption for overlength vehicles on interstate hwys? gebhardt faxed me something a year or 2 ago, it was some kind of loop-hole for racing transporters. Does anyone else know about this?

Lenght is a state by state deal. Florida has a $15 yearly permit up to 95 ft, and North Carolina has extended lenght thing passed last year or so. Years ago we transported cars from Michigan and the lenght limit then was 60', but that was then. There is an exemption for the money deal in Section 390 of the DOT manual. On that note I got a refusal from N. Carolina today on a deal. North Carolina is the worst in the nation. Charlie, see if someone knows the lenght thing in MI. If not, I can find it, but probably not till Monday or so. Let me know.

I got a ticket today in Ok. for going by scale, in my one ton pickup pulling 26 ft. trailer, They said any truck over 10,000 pounds has to stop in scale, But my truck has 10,000 pounds plates, but the Gvw is 11,800, on my truck, so i have to stop, but their scale sign did not say this. fine $150.00, also said you need DOT # on your truck, which i have, plus i need bill of lading, listing what in trailer, race car, tools, gas, tire`s, New federal law if you haul cars, you have to have 1,000,000.00 Liability insurance because you are hauling gas, I have this, but this may be only apply to people with ICC authority; semi car hauler. I agree. It is a new profit center. The problem is that many times they are not correct in how they apply the regulations. I know a friend that was stopped in Iowa and was from Nebraska. He had a pick up truck and a 24ft trailer with no lettering. They gave him all kinds of grief and some tickets. It turned out they applied the regulation, but did not follow the guidance that explained the exemptions. I e mailed the governor's office and actually got a response. It took awhile but the state police helped straighten out the little scale weasal that was hasseling law abiding citizens on the border. Joe is right though, it really vary's state by state.
Charlie, maybe you ought to reach out for the Governor, you might be one of the better tax paying customers in Michigan, maybe you should tell him you are moving and taking your tax money with you. I bet they listen.

It's not even the state by state, it's the particular idiot that's on duty at the time.
A fellow racer with a ramp truck and a 24' enclosed trailer got stopped after passing the scales going north on I75 in TN. They gave him a choice: $150.00 for a "fuel stamp" or $ 300.00 fine and have someone tow his rig back to AL. He paid the fine. On the way back he pulled into the south side weigh station and stopped to show them the fuel sticker and they told him he didn't need it and the guy on the other side was just an a**hole......but, he didn't get his money back! It would be nice if they would just add a new classification on driver’s license for this kind of thing. Make people take a test and prove they can handle this size of rig. However, no logbook would be necessary. I would feel better knowing that every one driving one of these big rigs have been tested. I am not just talking about racers. There are allot of retired people driving and pulling some really big rigs also.
Not sure what we can do about the people cracking down on pickups with relatively small trailers being hassled. |

This is one area our sanctioning bodies should go to bat for us, I'm talking all the alphabet soups from drag racing to roundy rounders. Howz about it NHRA and others? SRAC?
How about Nat'l Dragster looking into this and maybe SEMA using some legislative clout Print helpful notes in Digger I am going to contact them Monday as well as this post....maybe our sanctioning body would do us some good once! Play the tourism card (motels, eating, buying gas etc) |

I agree with Randall. SEMA needs to act now on this money grumbing act and set the record straight.
Sportsman racing means just that. |
