How would you feel about seeing this?

I was on my way to dinner this saturday and was passing by the local car show. I look over and in traffic next to me is a nice 1965 belvedere with repro racing stickers on the windows and a div 1 number (keep in mind we live in az) with SS/B letters on the car. Plus his license plate read 65wedge. I asked him if he thought that was a REAL super stock car and to my suprise... HE SAID YES! In the course of our stop light encounter he tried convincing me it was a max wedge super stock car and a 4 speed. This bothered me alot thinking he is gonna talk to a large group of people telling them this car represents a super stock car. Since none of us go out much to shows (where large groups of spectators go) this is what they will think of when seeing a stock/superstock shoot out. Street cars with mufflers on bfg radials.. boring. Am i wrong for feeling offended? Its like someone buying a jersey and saying they play for the NFL. It just seems wrong to me.

I'd laugh it off. There are lots of goofballs out there, gotta wonder sometimes where they get their information and cultivate their perceptions. If you run into him again, offer to pay his entry in the next S/SS combo race in your area. That would surely wake him up!

Sounds like that experience hit you like the word "restored" hits me. The true meaning of the word gets lost in so many "for sale" ads. Pretty interesting these days what some folks consider -restored-.

I see this BS all the time at car shows. Most dont have a clue as to what a car really came with when new. I just shake my head and walk away when they start running their mouths. Why dont they just call it what it really is....a decent (sometimes) street machine.

That car was on ebay a bunch of times, I guess there is a sucker born every minute. It clamed to be the last max wedge built but of course we know that was in 64. It mite have been the last 426 street wedge, single 4 car but I doubt it.

A good percentage of the vintage musclecars I see at the local shows and driveins are owned by the buyers of the cars and the stories that came with them. I just listen, nod and choose my words carefully (a closed mouth gathers no feet) when answering questions about the equipment on the cars. Why be the bad guy to tell them they overpaid for the car? Besides in most of the cases the purchase price wasn't a $10k overpayment on the real worth. Most of what I've seen will be worth what they paid within a couple of years The story just came for free. Hey, it's not like they paid $1m plus for a genuine 1970 Division 1 SS/EA Chevelle, right?

I always like the bracket racer that changes the dial on the window for the tow home. Seen that one many times.

I was actually at an Easter car parade on LI yesterday afternoon when I heard a major rumbling going on and a crowd around it. To my surprise was his plate which read Max Wdge. It was a 63 Max Wedge black, red interior, push butoon auto. factory manifolds with cut outs under openned, and yes the 2 inch tail pipes. I got to speak to him and his wife, nice people wish i remembered their names. He said it has a John Shaul engine in it. sounded and smelled sweet. Said he has a 66 Bevedere it sleeps next to in garage, lol.
Also spoke to a lady w a 72 GS350 car that noone in her family wants to inherit, can you believe it. Said sh'll eventually sell to a neighbor. She commuted 19 years in it. nice driver and 30 footer but damn, its all original w 180,000 miles and trans was just rebuilt last year and new exhaust w flowmasters so it sounds as good as it looks. Some old timers do get it right. No I'm not that old yet 46, just respect those who are. Chris.
