Default How do you figure this out.????

Car A dials a 12.10, runs 12.109 .019 reaction time
Car B dials a 11.72, runs 11.73 .011 reaction time

Car B gets there first by .0078 & mov was .0078.

Thats 7 thousands, almost 8. How many inches or feet did Car B win by ?????

Convert Car A's MPH to feet per second then multiply by the margin of victory to get the number of feet Car B won by.

MOV equals a little more than 1 foot doing the math on those numbers....

There once was a web site where you could figure that out, but it's no longer up and running. Anything on Michael Beard's site?

MOV X 1.47 X Speed of who crossed last

.0078X1.47X100=1.1466 feet

I've been discussing this with a few people lately and we've come to the conclusion that this formula gives you a mostly accurate number as long as both driver's keep their foot on the throttle all the way through the finish line. As soon as one of the driver's (mainly the second to cross...but both can effect a change) slam the brakes or change the rate of speed as they are crossing the finish it becomes much more of an approximation than an exact science.

The problem is most of our cars are consistantly accelerating all the way through the finishline stripe so the rate of speed isn't constant at any point on the track. Which means if that formula says it was a 5 foot stripe the second car was actually traveling at a slower rate of speed at the exact moment the first car crossed the finishline, than it was when it actually crossed the finishline so it was a little more than 5 feet (even if both kept their foot on the floor). Maybe too small to care about but it all depends on the speed and the rate of acceleration the car is still at.
