The higher the temp you fell comfortable with the better for consistency. Much easier to control late in the race.

To add to what Race Watcher said....I have found it depends on the oil type and viscosity. I have noticed on the dyno thin oils get to a temp where they gain less power earlier than thick oils. I would say that with a little on track testing you could find the temp that the engine/tranny liked. It may be a trade off of oil temp and manifold temp. The hotter the manifold the less dense the air is and the less power the engine makes. A few years ago I had a bracket race customer that had a sprag in the converter that needed heat to operate consistently. I helped him figure out why it always picked up first round after he put a data logger in the car. All it took was putting the tranny on the brake and flashing the converter once or twice after the tranny oil temp reached xxx temp when he warmed the car up. After that it operated the same all day. He started going more rounds after learning what his combination liked. One thing I liked about this customer was he kept outstanding records.
