Default Ss/vx?

Noticed the Bugs racing in NHRA SS/VX this weekend. I was familiar with the old modified compact class but this class is new to me. I have not got a chance to look this one up in the rule book. Anyone got the readers digest version on the class? I enjoyed going to the Bug Bash drags at Rockingham, Darlington, and Farmington. I remember a modified compact VW that ran IHRA Super Stock in the early 80's? I think the owners were Shavers and Lee from Albermarle.NC. There was also a Ghia that ran the Hot Rod 10.90 class. It's nice to see the Bug's running class again. Don Jackson

Wink Re: Ss/vx?

Where are they racing, Don? I didn't see any on the Gatornationals entry list. I know there were 4 of them racing the last 2 weeks out here. 3 Beetles and 1 Ghia,,with one setting the record at 10.92 I believe, at Phoenix,,not sure if all 4 ran at Pomona.
I'm curious to see if this class takes off.

It was Pomona. I am familiar with the old modified compact class. If memory serves me the classes were A,B,and C modifed compact. The last time I looked IHRA still listed the classes but NHRA moved the class in with maybe supermodified. The M/C classes were factored on weight to cubic inch. The stock VW's were 1588cc and replacing the 85.5 pistons and cylinders with a 87mm set would up the cc to 1641. This was a common engine size used in the day to keep the weight of the cars down. Today a common VW build for the street or strip is a 90.5mm piston and replacing the 69mm stroke crank with a 78mm stroker for a 2015cc engine. A mildly built 2015 will live 100K miles and pull like a power stroke diesel. A highly modified 2015 will be a terror on the street or the strip, and is still small compared to some of the VW drag engines built today. Don Jackson

Hi Guys I race a b/mc vw in the 70-80 we ran @ 16.5 lbs cubin so a 1800 cc motor =110cub =1800lbs are best was 11.80 @ 110.56 now the ss/vx cars are @ 12.5 lbs so the good ones run in the 10.60-70 it looks like its time for me to come out and race NHRA in superstock in 2012 see you at the Race Big Roger @ Heads Up Performance

Thumbs up Re: Ss/vx?

I can remember those VW Modified bugs with great affection. I remember Artie and Scooter Anderson's bug from D-2 hanging the hoops at the Gators! Jim

There was a D/MC as well, this is Ken and Toby Meeks 2000 CC Pinto, Robert Swartz can tell you more about this car if he is lurking. I believe it still exsists, perhaps in Chicago?
I am pretty sure there was a AA/MC class as well.
