An Inch should be enough to get by OK!

You didn't say how wide your rims are. Wider tires can grow more on the same width rim, the taller tire will take up about 1/4" of that 1" clearance, watch it, but you should be safe. But if you can afford it, it can help to go to a wider rim, which actually is recommended anyway. That way you can maintain a fuller contact patch while using more air pressure. It can help slick life, mainly the sidewalls, and top end stability. Many Stock class cars use 10" rims for their rule limited 9" tires.
