Default Six cylinder Super Stockers???

After doing a little internet digging on the inline six of Cotton Perry and watching some of the inline six modified cars I was wondering if anyone ran a inline six in Super Stock? I have saw straight six cylinder's in stock and modified/comp eliminator but have been going to the drags since 1981 and have never saw one running Super Stock. Can anyone chime in and shed a little light?? Thanks Don Jackson

My Buddy Bill Chaffin has raced a V6 Buick
with a single 4 Brl. in Super Stock for 10 or 15
years.....It runs in the Nines with around 270 CI.
There are several V6 Cars back east that are
Very Fast naturally asperated back east.

Straight 6...Can not think of any out here in the West
in SS,

Comp is where you find 6 cylinders. Ambrose and Huetman have run a Ford 300 inch inline 6 cylinder forever. I don't believe there is any combination that they have not tried on the old " Wood Chipper". If anyone is an expert on inline 6's it would be these two guys.

I for one would like to see a S/S class where an inline six would be competitive. That, or bring back the Modified Production classes. For those interested in inline engines, there is an organization with it's own website, www.inliners.org. The H.A.M.B also has threads on inline sixes.

Look up Adger Smith on this site, he has run an odd fire v-6 in SS for many years in an 85-6 Camaro . It flies and was # 1 qual at a bunch of nh and ih meets and set national records in both. He can tell you what you need to know

Inline 6 bangers in Comp....how about Kevin Self in F/EA !
He runs about 7.70's at about 155 MPH.....
That's at 6 # per CI, it's 4 valves per cylinder.....not to shabby !

The origional poster was asking about INLINE 6 cylinders in SUPER STOCK. I think the biggest issue would be the small 1 barrel carb that would be required that most inlines used. I wonder how a Pontiac SOHC 6 with the factory Q Jet would work in something like a 67 Firebird or LeMans. Or maybe one of the old Hyper Pack MoPar slant 6s, although both likely have too high a factory HP rating.

One I really miss. How about Clem LaChance in his SS/CS "Mad Frenchman" Maverick with a Ford inline 6. Clem was a great guy and always lots of fun to talk to.

The only inline six I could find that had a carb bigger than a one bbl. was the 250 Pontiac and the Chrysler super six and hyper pack six. A 1979 Volare with a 225 2 bbl. super six is NHRA rated at 155 with a weight break of 19.35. SS/P is a 17.00+ weight break it would be pretty heavy. The 1961 Lancer with a 225 hyper pack six and (I think) a AFB is NHRA rated at 196 and has a 13.18 weight break, a natural SS/L car. The 1968 Firebird with the 250 OHC and Q-jet is NHRA rated at 215 with a weight break of 14.49 a natural SS/M car. The Pontiac and the Hyper Pack were NHRA rated the same as the factory h.p. rating and they look high to me. It looks like Super Stock might be a hostile environment for these six's.
