I'm at my wits end trying to get my 68 Mustang 302 out to the track and I'm about ready to replace the transmission. It's a C4 from TCI that shipped with a case that wouldn't fit the transbrake I bought. The case was thread in and the brake is push in. I got a push in case and had a local trans shop rebuild it with the internals of the TCI. The issue is broken front pump seals under load. I have gone through about three of them and the car has never made a solid run down the track. The bell housing is an SFI unit that has been machined so that fit isn't the issue.
Short version: I'm ready to call it quits and order a new trans before it starts snowing or something stupid like that. Any recommendations for a good trans vendor? Performance Automatic and Hughes are on my look list. The car was built with GT/MA in mind, but it will have to be a streetable bracket racer until I can afford a trailer and better truck. Dale

Pro Trans.
Aluminum drums with more clutch surface area. Single cut gears versus helical with a bunch of gear ratio selections. It may be overkill for your application and it's expensive, but they have the best stuff out there. If you don't want Pro Trans to build your C4, contact Ed Horensky on this board. |

Thanks for the quick replies. The actual trans - the gear part - seems to be OK. I'm most concerned that I picked a converter with too high a stall speed for the street/strip application that I wound up with.
It's a TCI StreetFighter with a 3000-3500 stall. OK for a trailer car but I think I need something more like 2500. I have 3.89 gears and a CompCams solid roller with a .585 lift. It has a power range from 2200-6500rpm. With a 28 inch tire the math I've been able to find tells me I should have a stall of around 2500-2700 rpm for a 60 mph cruise to get the trans to lock up. With stall speed closer to the bottom of the power range is should street and cruise better. I give up a bit at the strip but at least I get there to race. PA has a better trans brake with an internal solenoid and deeper oil pickup so I'm going to start with ordering that. The TCI brake/valve body I have has a rather shallow pickup and might have starved the trans under acceleration. Part number 26306. They also have an 11 inch converter with a stall of 2200-2800 on a 10.5 bolt circle. Part number 26212. These are both items that I would have to order separately no matter what trans vender I go to if it doesn't fix the problem with fluids (gears seem fine - no grinding), so I won't be stuck with more parts if I do replace the trans. As much as I love the NorthWest, stuff like this makes me wish I was back in Ohio. Toss it in the truck and run up over the border to Joy road. End of story. Thanks.

Did anyone take over JPT (Jim's Performance Transmissions) Jim Paquet in Michigan?
I thought one of his employees took over the business. Anyone had any experience with them?
