Is there a pitman arm that will allow use of a vega box on an a-body without too much hassle? Thanks.

watching this post. I am considering a lighter weight steering box for the Super - 10 which has a G body steering linkage.
maybe we can both learn a weight reduction lesson ![]()

I put one on my gen 1 Camaro and used the Vega pitman arm. I can't remember how much lighter it was. I put a light weight column at the same time.

The vega box is a few pounds (4-5 if memory serves from last winter) lighter than the a body or s10 style box, bolts on the same, but the vega pitman arm is almost 2" shorter than the a body. We're putting together a 71 now and it has power box as does my parts car, so it would be nice to use the vega box we have to compensate for an all iron BBC.

I think the vega arm was longer than the Camaro one. 6 inches long as I rember. I bought it from Jegs. The only issue I had with it was the bolts on the cover came loose
And caused a front end shimmy. It took me a bit to figure that out. So check the cover bolts to make sure they are good and tight before you run the car.

I put a vega box on my 67 camaro years ago. It will bolt right on but we used the original pitman arm. Had to have the center machined out and then the spline portion of the vega pitman arm cut off and turned down to fit. Welded in when fitted. I read that is how it was done somewhere and did it. I think you can buy one the correct length now. Not sure where.
It will lose a little weight and free up some header space but the steering is quicker and requires more effort. Maybe Ed Quay sells them as they install those boxes on 82-92 camaros. Also I thought the vega and S10 were the same box. |

Jim,
The S-10 box is much larger than the Vega box. The S-10 box is even larger than the early Nova/Chevelle/Camaro manual boxes.

Yes than this must be a vega box on my car.
I remember now I sent both pitman arms to some shop on the west coast that was set up to do the modifications. Been so long ago I can not remember who that was. |
