Sonny Dutton raced and still races a Blue 65 or '66 SS 396 Malibu in B and C/S here in Div.2. Haven't seen him this year though. Jim

Your memory serves you well, Billy. Sonny Dutton raced a 1970 Cutlass W-31 4 speed in the early to mid Seventies, if my memory is also working, ( doubtful). Seems like it was white or yellow, not sure 'cuz Sportsman racers seldom were shown in color on the pages of ND back then. I believe he won two Nat's in a row about that time. A very good guy, he didn't know me from sikkum, but was willing to answer all my pestering questions about Rockets during a 90 minute phone call.
I'll bet if young Mr. Waibel asked his Dad about Sonny we could find out a lot more. Jim Waibel was another guy I followed closely, along with Ingersoll of course. Dennis, congrats on uncovering that killer combo. |

thank,s guy,s i remembered the car,s from gainsville many year,s ago, seem,s like they had a couple of oldsmobiles, one i thought was a W_31 car ,they hauled them in in a semi rig... which was uncommon for that time. ken, i to followed waibel /ingersol combinatin closely in the day , acually tracked the car down to try to buy it several year,s back and several owner,s later ,it had been running in the super class,s and had been changed to much for super/stock , started on one for ourself, gathered a lot of pieces and it,s sitting in the shed........... thank,s dennis j/sa ssgt/ma

Mark is correct..Dunton. I've got a collection of old National Dragsters going back to the '70's and there are a couple of pics. of his car in them. I'm pretty sure he was hooked up with Jim Waibel back then. Of course, just about all of the Olds from down south had Waibel Competition decals on their cars.
