Are both practices of zero decking acceptable?
Cutting deck and measuring deck height and adjust pin height or Pre-assemble and measure using dial indicator/bridge, then decking Thanks

Pre-assemble with the pistons, rods and bearings you will be running. I just did this with a Dart SHP sbf. I used a dial gauge and double checked it with a bar bolted across the cylinder and a feeler gauge. Swinging the gauge from the piston to the deck can be tricky. The two measurments differed by .005. If the mains need to be honed have that done first. The align hone may slightly adjust the relationship between the piston and deck.
On line engine calculators indicated that my deck clearance would be .010 but it measured .015. Measure (twice). After everything is machined do a full assembly and run the clay test to verify your piston to valve clearance.

pre assemble, measure & deck accordingly....rod length & crank stroke can be different between cylinders. get the average distance, same heigth on both decks. I just install the oil rings to do this...

427FE Are you asking about stock or superstock, there are rules for stock on compression height { pin to top of piston]

You can't machine the top off a Stock legal piston. The brand and part number has to remain intact. You can do anything you want to a Super stock piston top, as long as it looks kinda the same as original ;-)
