I'll take a stab at that.
I don't usually pay any attention to the speed. But as for lowest ET: Traditional SS is J.B. Clegg's SD455. Close to the mid 9's. Ran a pair of 9.62's at this race. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop Stocker is definitely Scott Burton's '70 Formy, even tho it's no longer in this country. Dipped into the 9's at a T&T, & I think it has run some 10-teens in competition. But, it may take me a while to find a link to those. But I'll be lookin. In the mag article, I think he said he'd run a 10.17 @ 128. Don't think any other Pontiac Stocker has come close to that. Don't know what John Schole ran, when he had the RAIV engine. http://www.hotrod.com/articles/hppp-...tiac-firebird/ He ran a 10.195 @ 128.89, in class, at Indy 2015. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2015#indextop In GT, if a Cobalt body is OK, Robert Cruzen has run some 8's. Turned an 8.900, for a GT/AA class win at Indy. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2016#indextop If any are quicker, I'm not aware of it. Last edited by oldskool; 12-31-2019 at 05:23 AM. |

Don't think John ever went as quick as J.B.
And the 3rd gen Bird he has been running for several years does not have Pontiac power. I think most of the Pontiac guys, who haven't already seen it, will enjoy some of these videos. http://missiongarage.com/photos.htm Is an SS/AM car considered a "...traditional Pontiac Super Stocker..." ? http://missiongarage.com/team.htm Jim Clark ran an 8.581, at this race. I saw his engine listed as a 439 Pontiac on one pre-entry list. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2016#indextop Ran 8.574 at this race. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2017#indextop So, if SS/AM cars are allowed in this deal, then they'll run quicker than reg SS class Pontiacs. I assume they can run any carb, or maybe 2. I think this class took the place of the old Modified Production class. But a lot of you guys know more about it than me. Hey, you guys are a riot.
For any who don't like Pontiacs & don't wanna read anything about 'em, just don't read the Pontiac threads & posts. But, just if by chance there is somebody here who don't know, yes, Pontiac built some RA5 engines. Supposedly, none were sold in cars. I think some were sold over the counter. And some went out the back door, to serious racers. There are guys on some Pontiac forums who have some RA5 parts in their street cars. The ports on the heads were too big for the cubic inch engines they were put on. Might have done better on a good 455. https://www.hagerty.com/articles-vid...that-never-was http://carguychronicles.com/2018/05/...ram-air-v-gto/ https://www.hemmings.com/blog/articl...tiac-firebird/ Again, for those who don't know, there are now alum heads patterned after the RA5 heads. Well hey, that's far more RA5 info than most here care to see. Last edited by oldskool; 01-01-2020 at 05:10 AM. |
