I may be helping a friend move a car from Michigan to Syracuse NY. If we travel from Michigan to Syracuse with a car he just purchased and only have a hand written sales receipt for the car will we have Customs problems? This would be the Port Huron MI to Niagara Falls route.
thanks in advance. Ray

First of all, it would seem you don't have to cross any borders to make
that trip. The US route may be a bit longer, take it. If you bring a titled car to the Canadian Border, and say we are just cutting through, the Border officer thinks to himself, hmm, what if they leave this car in Canada, and I didn't collect taxes and duties, and it comes up down the road, I'm in deep doodoo. Without a title you can declare the car as "Parts Only" like is done on the non-serialized COPO's, Cobra Jet's, etc. but the price of the parts on the declaration is what you paid for the car. Because it is a motorized vehicle, as opposed to a race car trailer for example, you must have the importation paperwork completed and in front of Canada Customs at least 72 hours before you attempt entry. What you get when you get there, as Forrest Gump said Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get. Get a great officer, almost painless, except the taxes and duty you will pay. Get a not so great officer, who's really pissed at their spouse, and you'll wish you took the Michigan-Florida-Maine-New York route, far less painful. J.R. |

Go the American route far less chance of problems! Went to FJ?s to Dyno an engine one time the Custom lady at Port Huron wanted to know why the extra spark plugs didn?t have serial numbers. Was at customs extra 3 hours! Even took a couple of plugs out of the truck to show her there were no serial numbers on them that didn?t mater to her!

As a Canadian who has imported multiple US cars into Canada, you will run into trouble trying to cross the border with just an intention to recross into the US and no paperwork to back it up.
In essence, the car would have to be transported "in bond" to satisfy Canada Customs that the vehicle will be returned to the US as promised. This normally requires the services (paperwork) of a Customs Broker or a transport service that can issue the bond. Might be best to choose a different route to reach your destination.

Avoid Michigan borders at all costs!!!...I have been crossing into Michigan for 20yrs and this year I was denied entry going to Indy by Libtard Border Protection. Had to do 10 hour detour back through Peace Bridge in NY and had no issues(Thank you Mr. Nagy and Mr. Allison). Hopefully your new "Border Czar" fixes this ****show!!! #MAGA

Thanks guys. I will take the short cut through Canada with empty trailer and then take the car back the long way through the US. Ray
