What timing do you run on the 283. I never been one to wrench on timing. What do you guys run for instance what you call bracket mode? I set mine on 37 where it starts easy .All our bracket engines run about 37.
Does everyone advance lets say heads up mode? Does that really help or does the racer just feel like it revs a bit quicker? Some honest answers could save me some test n tunes lol. I always try everything but if I can save time and $ I can apply it to the purses. ![]() |

If you want to save time and money on figuring the best ignition timing , Dyno it. At one time I was skeptical of dyno's and thier operators, but I have since changed my tune (haha) on that as I have seen power increases in my engine program every time I have had the engine on the dyno. fwiw

Philbilly,
You can start with 36-37 timing & if you run real good gas 39-40 ..? You need to try it at track .. It depends on headers, cam timing, jetting, valve lash, trans/gears , etc .. Go to a test n tune & make two runs where it is , then advance it 2-3 degrees and see what happens ? Then put back to 34-35 degrees and see what happens, don't change anything else !!! You will then have a baseline for that kind of weather, I think you will PU when you move timing ahead ... Let us know what you find out ? One change at a time ... LOL ....

Is this stock or superstock? My superstocker liked about 35 but if you have your box updated by TecWest a person might be able to pull another degree or two out. Tom

Dyno testing and in car testing is required here Phil. There is no one answer. I know we did both and had sveral 283s in different cars. The timing needs varied. Maybe the cams being different was the key. Some needed different timing depending upon the car it went in. Our Nova, a chevelle or a biscayne. You could get ten responses, ten answers. They might be right for the car they are talking about and do nothing for yours.
Too many people think dyno testing is costly, but it can save some money. Just spending time chasing jet and timing etc., can be a real eye opener.
