Need some help. Can anyone explain to me if their are tarrifs on importing automotive parts (ie, motors and transmissions from Canada. Also how do you figure out the exchange rate US dollars to Canadian to determine value.
Thanks, Aaron |

I live in Canada (West Coast), but close to the US border. Although there is no longer duties like before, there is provincial and GST taxes that may or not be applicable, depending on what the item is. Since I live near the border, I normally have parts shipped to a US border town parcel depot, and pick up my stuff in the US, and handle my own Canada Customs paperwork, which is cheaper than dealing with a Customs Broker agency. If you do not live near a border, then you need to factor in the brokers fee`s, and higher transport costs. As for the differance between Canadian & US money, it is constantly changing, but lately, our Canadain dollar is worth approx 94 cents US. (Much better for us than the 65 cents it was several years ago).

I don't know about taxes & tarrifs on parts purchased in Canada, but this site should help with current exchange rates:
http://www.xe.com/ucc/ They have a currency exchange station just across the border, many businesses take American money, but often give Canadian change and some U.S. banks also do exchanges and have current rates. If I recall, if you buy more than $200 in many Canadian goods, bring all the receipts and you can get one of the taxes refunded at the border when returning. (Called GMT or something like that.) Currently, the exchange rate is not very favorable to the US, as $1 CAD is approximately equal to $0.95 USD (I knew the dollar was weak, but I didn't know it was THAT weak, as I can remember when it was almost a 2:1 ratio of Canadian dollars to US dollars, and I'm only 36 years old!)
Regarding duties and taxes, that's a much more complex subject. I don't know if there is anybody on here that's familiar with imports and exports, but I know the duties and taxes that you have to pay depend upon the type of item, the value of the item, and whether you are purchasing the item from an individual or from a business. It used to be that as a general rule of thumb that if the product is manufacturered in North America and shipped within North America that it was duty free under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). But I don't know if that's still true or not. I would suggest you start here for your research: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/import/co...ty_free-e.html Good luck! Jason Oldfield S/G & S/ST 1838 |

I did this many times over the years with a friend of mine from Canada. If I were bringing to him (car, parts, engine) he would come out in the morning, off load and return in late afternoon. Same if I were picking up, it is less trouble for the Canadain going in and out as they do it to go racing in the US all the time and have far less problems than us.
Pay him to bring the car out. bp133 Bob Pagano |

Everyone part of the problem that the seller is 500 miles North of the border and I'm in Texas. So traveling for the buyer and seller is a real problem. The only solution is shipping and there lays the problem. Now how do handle this.

I have done a little of this. Very easy for an American to bring an American made auto back to his country. Also fairly easy for a Canadian to bring a vehicle back to Canada. All other situations I would recommend hiring a customs broker. Since 9/11 both sides of border have become somewhat anal. good luck
