Default 1974 Pontiac 455 (stock eliminator)

How competitive is this engine today? Looking at both the 250 hp. and 290hp. SD.in a Firebird. It's natural classes can be E, F, G, and H. Used to run in I yrs. ago. Wondering how quick it can be today with the good stuff. Appreciate any help.

Hi Jesse, The 290HP 455 also known as the SD, is a little stiff at 350, but should run well with up to date parts that we can run now. If you can put a good trans and converter behind it , I think it can be at least a 1 to 1.10 under car. The 255 hp is the same deal, I think this might be the better of the 2 combos. It has almost the same compression, Heads are not nearly as good or big volume wise as the SD but it is 35 less HP. The parts will be cheaper to come by, and I think when you are done this can be a 1.15 to 1.25 under car with some hard work. Both combo's can be good and fun to work with.

Just a thought, Don Kennedy has a 455 SD superstock engine for sale here that runs .900 under. Available for $9K. You would have nearly that much into a CORE 455 SD! Could be a cheap way to have a powerful Pontiac in SS if you want to consider alternatives.

I am not interested in doing superstock with this car. It's been a stocker for a long time and was fast long ago. It has a broken engine and he has the cores to build both combos. I am wanting to run this car again as a stocker, and probably will. My Nova project will take awhile, so this is an alternative plan. My concerns were regarding weight issues. Either combos are real heavy. My buddy told me he ran it heavy as an I car, but I didn't know it was this heavy. Although I am more interested in building the 250, I think that combo is better, he wants to build both. We will see. The car needs some updating and I think I can get it going much quicker than the Nova. Although I never followed Pontiac engine development looks to me like they were fast long ago and were hit many times, considering the weigh they need to pack now. Just wanting to know what I'm in for, lol.
