What year cars did these originally come in?

late 70's

1976 through 1988. 1981 and newer have the updates. Most came in A , B and G bodies. The only truck they came in was the later El Camino.

Is any one model year better than the other?

I use any 200 newer than 1981. The very late ones have a hardened sun shell, and a thrust bearing under the lo roller clutch.
