Hello guys...I have a buddy @ work that has a 69 Fairlane 500 with a 428Cj his ? is how much Hp dose he need to run S/ST? We are redoing the engine this winter & it's now time to buy a cam. Here's what he has 428Cj flat-top engine good set of heads Victor intake 850 Holley C6 with a pro-tree brake 8" TCI converter 5.14 (or 4.56) gear 31x10.5 W slicks with a ladder bar set-up. The car is around 3200-3300 with him in it (he's 140lbs). Thanks for any input

I would think with a 3300 lb car you would need 500 hp minimum,which should be fairly easy with that combo

I'm running 600 hp and one of the slowest in the field (carrying 3020lbs). if that helps ?

Thanks guys! He's not worried about a lot of mph right now just wanting to get it to run like 10.70's so he can try this & see if he likes it.

I've got 700+ and all I get is 10.70 @ 122 @ 4000 lbs.

No I do have a buddy @ work with a 69 Fairlane 500 that wants (or thinks he wants) to go S/ST racing....That being said if I sell the Cutlass I think I just my start building a S/ST car...that Super Series @ Trails looks REAL good to me!

Well here' the math:
ET from HP (1/4 mile) = (WEIGHT / HP)^.333 * 5.825 (note the little ^ symbol indicate an exponet i.e you need to take the value to that power) Keep in mind that this is rear wheel HP not flywheel HP as measured on a Dyno. if your running a torque converter you will lose ~ 8-10% So if you calculate (3300# /563HP)^.333 X 5.825= 10.50ET but thats rear wheel HP so you need another 8% to at the flywheel or 563(HP) x 1.08 =~608HP to run 10.50 10.90 calcs out to 544HP but that would leave you no room to account for bad air,bad tracks etc. Try this web site for more racer math www.freewebs.com/soslo/formulas.htm#hp_from_et Hope this helps!

Baer, When we dyno'd my motor at Troys it showed 496 on the dyno. My car weighted 3020 with me and i went 10.25 @ 131.00 on good day very bad day i would go 10.42 @129.00. ![]() 600 hp in my car and it would fly, even with my big *** in it..... ![]()

How about finding yourself one of the ford svo v-6 engines and run s/st at 2000 lbs. and 550 hp easy with a really conservative camshaft,should run deep in the nine's at over 135,thats how i an doing it.
