Interesting article. Maybe this is where the old stockers should go for a while ,until the new stuff is factored correctly. In my opion that would be super stock.

Did you notice those oversized ugly hood scoops on the MoPars ! If your going o build a nostalgia car why put something on it that isnt they way they came from the factory? AT LEAST MAKE IT LOOK LIKE IT SHOULD.

Can't make everyone happy and obviously you are one of those people. You have options it's your choice what you do with them.

The Hood Scoops are the pits, the engine rules are a bit a miss also but they run a bracket type race so pick the et you like and race. Oh yea, no two-steps, I can dig that.

I wonder if the NMCA has ever considered adding Super Stock or Stock Eliminator classes? I know the NSCA tried it as a combo eliminator. Looking at the rules of Nostalgia Super Stock, it appears they are pretty liberal "any internal modifications permitted". That sure makes tech easy, but that also equates to a very expensive engine if you want to even think about being competitive. Just my .02.

You know I used to work as head tech before Bob Meyers came on board for NMCA back when it was out of Memphis Tenn and owned by Racing Head Service. Who do you think came up with the et breaks for this NSS stuff? After I saw all of the cheating going on when it was a heads up deal the late Ivars Smeltnicks and myself came up with the et breaks and to answer the question about expensive engines ....no one said you had to run 10.00. You ran the class you car was capable to run in whether it was 11.00 or 12.00. The engines had to LOOK like they did when original which meant the correct carbs, intakes, blocks, etc. The engine had to at least resemble the stock combos. No Sheet metal manafolds, and dominators. Back then at least the cars LOOKED like they should and some were the REAL DEAL like the Golden Camandos 63 Plymouth except for the couple of home made 2% altered wheelbase cars I caught during the heads up deal. . The tires were more like they were when the cars were new (10.5 max tread...NOT side wall designation) and then M/T screwed up the deal with that 10.5 W tires that were about 13 inches wide. The A/FX cars ran a 10 inch Racemaster tire back in the early 60' and the S/S cars ran a 7 inch tire. Because there were no 7 inch tires around it was decided to run a real 10.5 tire so the cars would NOT have to be tubbed. It WAS a good show back then and a lot of people had fun without the hassel of tear downs, and spending big bucks. Later the NMCA was sold to Hot rod magazine and those who ran it were young people who dont even know what they looked like back in the day nor did they care. Most didnt know how to work on a car but they sure could write about the fastest street crap. They were concerened with NOS fastest street cars and NSS got lost in the shuffle and bastardized. The rest is HISTORY ! If you going to build a Nostalgia car then at least make it look period correct instead of looking like a bracket car. My 2 1/2 cents.

I agree the NSS cars should be closer to the stockers and superstockers back in the day

I have been racing NSS since 1995. I have seen the class change a little over the past years. Currently I am on the rules committee for NSS. Ya we have a few hood scoops that are a couple inches taller than stock and some of our faster NSS cars some more modern parts to push them into the low nines and even a few run 8.70s. But I will tell you this type of racing is alot of fun. The NMCA and several others series run NSS. But I think if you came and watched these cars you would find they look very Nostagic and this is some tough racing. Many of the racers are great bracket racers that have decided to do something different than running at there local track. The cars are all big block 60s cars with 10.5W tires that are 11.5 inches wide, no delay boxes, trans brakes, air shifters, cant even use a two step. Ive have loved racing my Challenger in NHRA events but I will never quit NSS racing.
Thank you, Doug Duell STK 350 NSS 1 |
