What if the AHFS used the class average instead of the index. A certain deviation from that average, would earn horsepower, a negative deviation would get a reduction.
Example: Current AHFS A/SA Index 11.00 -1.10 proposed instant trigger =9.900 a run of 9.989 get's hit By comparing to the average (these are made up numbers, just for example sake A/SA 11.00 index class average 10.30 (-.7 under) .50 Deviation from average a run of 9.799 earns a hit AA/SA 10.60 Index class average 10.10 (-.5 under) a run of 9.599 gets hit. What does everyone think? And like i said, the average number and deviation were made up. the faster the class averages end up being, the smaller the deviation may need to be. But you could average all of the classes then decide on a "standard deviation". BOUNS Side effect. Unlike the current system which punishes success, this would encourage guys to run all out to keep their class average fast. Might cut down on instant hits, but could still reign in the grossly underfactored combos, which is what its all about right?

This could work. But what do you do if there are only a couple of cars in the class? We could control the index very easy.
I'm not knocking the thought, just trying to give the "what if's"

I'm not suggesting it be used to make index changes ( but i understand that in the hood scoop classes it would), there would obviously be additional parameters

The AA index needs to be adjusted to a 10.75 or 10.80 first.

Craig, I agree it needs to be changed to get the underfactored combos in line.
All AA racers need to e-mail NHRA ahfs@nhra.com to express this or it will not be considered. Also e-mail everyone on the rules commitee.
