A year or so ago, there was a discussion on here about Gold Cards, and G.C.'s that are won in one format of racing (Bracket Finals) not being able to be used in another format (NHRA/IHRA), and vice versa. Is this still true? Someone asked about it yesterday on another messageboard, and was brought up because Edmond Richardsson won Sportsman at the NHRA Division 3 Bracket Finals at Indy this past weekend. Does that mean Edmond can;t use that particular G.C. to enter Stock and S/Comp? Just wondering.

Mike, if you search for "gold card" you'll see some of the related threads, more recent one on the subject indicating you couldn't cross a bracket gold card over to National events but previous ones said they could, just pay the insurance surcharge for entry. I didn't see anything clarifying it on the NHRA website but you gotta think that Mark Faul, Richardson, etc wouldn't run Sportsman unless they felt a Gold Card would help them out beyond just their bracket activity...seems like Hefler would know since he won Pro Bracket at Pomona last fall...

Unless things have changed, a gold card would only allow you to enter into the class that it was won in. I know people that have won the division as well as the world and have a gold card for both, but could not use one of them for another class.

I personally know at least three Bracket Finals champs who were going to go Class racing in one form or another, until they found out their "Gold Card" wasn't eligible at Nat'l/Div'l events. Two were looking at buying cars, and another had parts on order, which he then canceled. The sanctioning bodies failed to set the hook and unwittingly cost themselves and many others a lot of money in the long run. I know a couple of Bracket Finals champs who won back when the Gold Card was good for everything, and those guys have spent incredible amounts of money with manufacturers, tracks, and sanctioning bodies ever since. You do the math.

A gold card or silver card won, is good for any class as long as it was won at a Lucas Event or National event. A summit gold car is only good for Summit race and in some case other bracket races.

I had a gold card from the Summit Series, they honored it at National events for any class, but not at a division race. I went to Indy, Bristol, Gators and Atlanta on NHRA's dime. That was back in 2004. Now I'm not sure how they work the cards. What the hell, they are having buy backs after 1st round at the D2 NHRA bracket finals this year, so who knows how anything works now.

Edmond Richardson vs Mark Faul in Sportsman would be an interesting matchup. I don't know what car Edmond was using, but Mark used his 'ol "Torpedo Back" '51 Chevy at the Bracket Finals in Boise when he won Labor Day weekend. A true Sportsman car, not his stocker.

I emailed Sue Hutchinson of the NHRA Division 4 office about this. This was her reply:
"The Gold cards are series specific, but a Gold earned at the Summit ET Finals can be used at a NHRA National event for two Pit Access spectator tickets which you would pick up at the NHRA VIP Will call booth during the season your Gold Card is active. If you have any additional questions please let me know." So Gold Cards earned at Summit ET Finals can't be used for entry to LODRS divisionals and/or NHRA National events. That's NHRA's stance on Gold Cards. |
