Alan why do you like the ferrea over the others. At one time they flowed a little better, but with the new rules.they are about the same. Jim Hanig

Jim, we've been happier with the quality and reliability of the Ferrea valves than with other manufacturers. Ferrea has been easier to work with as well.

Well, I hate to say this, but don't get hung up on name brands. It seems like quality is becoming different for each part # that is sold by any Name Brand company. Last week I did a set of IMCA heads for another shop and they provided the Ferrea valves. 1.94/1.50 as per rules. They were not up to the ususal Q.C. (quality) that I have seen in Ferrea. The seat angles were off. The back side angles were all over the place and not concentric with the seats. When I ground the seats correctly the margins varied in thickness.
I'm hoping they dumped some seconds on E-bay or the "Net" that didn't pass their Q.C. It was so bad I called the other shop and requested another set of valves, which he didn't have. This experience was highly out of the ordinary for what I've seen with Ferrea valves. I hope this is not going to be Ferrea's new standard of quality.

I have been a technical person most all my life (and that is a long time). As well as playing with cars I worked for a huge company and we had a super lab that I got to play in. We could test or check about anything you wanted to look at. I really dont understand any saying any particular valve or anything is better than others. I really depends on the circumstance that each is used in. I played with many valves over the years. I was around when Manley was THE VALVE to use. Well really it was the only one we could use. Nuttin else to git. Then all kinds came on the market. Both domestic and foreign. I too have used many Ferrea but also along the way I have used those from a company called REV. The owner, Al, will just about do any thing you want. As you well know, and you can make a simple valve angle change and that valve that would out flow all the others may go to the back of the bus. You can raise or lower a valve in the head and see the flow change. And yes I too have seen some changes in Ferrea, but I still consider their valves to be one of the best in the market. And I do have a problem with a company that lets some of their rejects get out to the back door and get on sites like Ebay and are still sold under their name. Just plain dumb. reed |

10-4 Reed. I'm an old fart that was also around when Manley was "IT". :~)
I think my account number is 2 digits. I think we are on the same page as to what quality means. My backgound in Engineering started in quality control. If I was a WD with Ferrea I would have called and questioned what I saw. The last time I checked with them because I'm winding down on the volume I run I don't meet their 'qualifications' for WD. I buy the Ferrea I use through another WD. She gives me a competitive price and the service of a volume distributor. I have no idea where or how the other shop buys their Ferrea. I do the head work for them because the restricted valve job is beyond their abilities. I did a lot of R&D to come up with a valve job that flows well with the backside shape of the Ferrea valve they have been using. You know Ferrea could be like so many other companies and could have started outsourcing certain parts of their product line. That is one of the reasons why I suggested going by a Brand name isn't always best. I'm sure there are a lot of us that still chose the best part to suit the application. ;~)

Adger
I raced half my life while I was employed by this large company. I promised my children that I would not leave the area for a "better" job. So as a result I was manager of Engineering, manager of Quality Control and eventually Manager of Shop Operations before this plant down turned and went the way of going over seas and way South. I retired 2004 and went to my shop that I have had since 1974. I too have down sized my labor content and no longer purchase those large quantities but still have several part time helpers and build still quite a few engiiiines. But during my industrial tenure, I got to pick up many skills that helped me with engines. I built me a flow bench that will flow more air than 2 normal flow benches. It flows using digital flow recording and manometers so that I can correlate for differences. Both have their advantages. Recently I purchased one each of many brands of valves that are adequate for in quality for our race needs, so that I could see flow capabilities and found that some had certain good characteristics and am trying to incorporate those into one valve. Some time I wish to share thoughts with any one that plays like I am doing. Any one can PM me if they like. I can go from the flow bench to my dyno. I just ran a short 6 sigma trial on my dyno for repeat ability so I know if the truth is there. reed |
