"I really don’t believe there is cheating taking place. Maybe I’m being naïve, but I think most racers are pretty honest. Oh, we all might skirt the rules somewhat, but when we know it’s wrong, I think most everyone stays away from it."

Well John, there are MSD boxes that can do "things" that aren't "legal" that are "legal" in S/ST, S/G, S/C and bracket classes. There are people who will, for a fee, "enhance" an MSD box. I get a little itchy when I hear Racers talking about slew rates. What's a slew rate?
Getting into something that I know a little bit more about (just slightly), what does it take to use the capabilities of a modern aftermarket ECU in a modern Stocker as a down-track timer? I'm guessing not much. We know that they can be used as a form of traction control. Why couldn't they be used as a 21st century "Matty Box"? Two things that I've been told by two different Racers over the years, the first being from a Racer who I have a great deal of respect for. "Billy, we're all cheating a little bit. We all know what everybody else is doing. The trouble starts when somebody gets too far out of line". The second from a Racer who I have no respect for whatsoever. "He's cheating, he's cheating and he's cheating so I'm gonna cheat. I want the most bogus stuff that I can get because they are getting away with it and so will I". Take it for what it's worth.

Well I surely don't lean toward someone must be cheating when I get out run by a mile. I figure I'm not smart enough or not working hard enough.
Since I can't prove it I won't mention a name. The Person has been pretty successful in stock and SuperStock. I raced this person and I was amazed how the car would run right on near every pass. When the person was next to me. The person never look over just stared at the tach like it was a gyrometer. Like Goldie Locks. Too cold, too hot, just right. |

At one national event I attended some of the losers in the first few rounds in S/G were checked by a plug in device to the MSD boxes. Why the losers, not the winners? Not sure anyone really wants to know. My 2 Cents Rick Cates |

I had an NHRA Tech guy & an MSD guy come to my car, to plug into my MSD box. I assumed they did everybody's. The guy was scrolling through something (I assumed what he read out of my MSD box). NHRA guys asked "Look OK?" MSD guy says "So far". Came to me later to tell me I was OK.
I run different timing in each gear, but that's in the ECM. Used to turn the second set of points on in my old '56 Chevy's distributor, by a toggle switch tripped by my Hurst shift lever, going into second gear.

As far as cheating goes I don't think they have bounced anyone at Indy tear down in the recent few years that I can remember. That says the fast guys are not blatantly cheating. I am sure some are in the gray area as we would expect. I am one of the slow guys that qualify in the second half of the Q sheet. I know if I upgraded some of my stuff I could probably get near the top half. I could do that but I don't think I would enjoy myself any more than I do now. I still would not be a contender to win class or qualify at Indy as there are other combos that run the same class as I with more Cu/In with less weight than I have to run. Not complaining just a fact of life. As far as I know my car is 100% legal. Would be nice to see some of the older iron get some HP back to make them a little more competitive. I personally like the real Super Stock cars as opposed to the jellybean cars and modified stuff.
