On my application form I asked for my old number from 20yrs ago if it was available and I got it. I just sent the form to the person that was in the info for the application.

About 10 years ago now, when I renewed my license/membership, I requested a change from #7551 to #7503 (my Grandpa's). Just sent in a letter requesting the change along with my renewal paperwork. They issued me #7503 for both classes. Pretty easy, actually.

Just ask for it. If it’s available they’ll give it to you. There may be a place on the form to list your current number.

I have had my NHRA permanent number for brackets since the 70s, which I asked for at that time. In the late 80s, when I was due to renew my number, I also asked if that number was available for Super Street which I was running at the time, and it was, so I added Super Street, and then Stock and Super Stock, and now I have the same number for all 4 classes. I had a buddy, who had a SST number, but he went to a bracket race, and had to cover up his painted on SST number, and shoe polish a temporary bracket number, as a different car that weekend had the same number, but just for brackets, so my buddys SST number was no good for brackets. Nice to have the same number for whatever class you may run in. As mentioned, I just called the Division office. And even though I now live in Div.1, I retained my original Div. 6 number , that I have been using for over 45 years. Just keep in mind, if you let your number expire, it can be given out to another racer, although I believe they may hold it for a while for you to renew.
