I'd stay away from anything that thief is involved in.

I noticed that the 400 pound spare tire is missing from Judy's car. Interesting story I, but at the time, I wondered how they were able to run that car in some of the lower SS classes. The spare, along with a little push from MOPAR in the shipping weights allowed the spare to work I guess.

Hi Jerry. I was down at Steve Koppien's shop the other evening and we looked at that car on the web. Lots of Division 5 history around that car and that time frame..the height of the great 'Chevy vs. MoPar' War in Division 5. Judy was always a killer driver and Dennis Mauer was well ahead of his time as tuner and engine builder. Dennis' personal 65 Dodge SS/CA car was a killer as well.

I watched her and John Lingenfelter (in his green SS/NA 'smog motor' Corvette) stage at Brainerd and told cousin DB in my best Dylan singing voice: "...and the times, they are a-changin' ".

Stay warm. -Al

Hi Al,

You're right!! If it wasn't a CHEVY vs. MOPAR war, it was at least a Denver area let's pick sides war. At the time Herman Chapman did Steve's brother Chuck's engines as well as alot of stuff that ran around good old TVD and Division V. Dennis Maurer of course did the Mopar stuff in the same areas. I pretty much did my own engines, but somehow, I suppose of the TVD connection, I was considered connected to Herman Chapman by CHEVY. The funny thing is, being kinda laid back, I didn't even know this feud was going on.

As things went, Connie and I took the Chevelles to Indy in 1979; her SS/MA car and my SS/NA wagon. We were pitted a couple of spots down from Judy and Dennis, so we went over and talked with them a number of times. While sitting in their trailer having a pop, Judy pretty much surprised me by saying, "Don't you think you two are going to get in some trouble talking to us". I didn't have a clue what she was talking about, so my reply was, "Trouble for what"? Dennis then said, "Well you'll be in trouble with the Chevy GOD, Herman". I told him that Herman was just another friend, and I did my own stuff, so I guess I could talk to whomever I wanted to. But that was the FIRST I knew of the WAR you mentioned.

By the way, we spent a lot of time there with Judy and Dennis the rest of the weekend, and no warheads fell because of it.

And yea, that SS/CA car was a killer for it's time. When Judy set the record at TVD, I'd have to say that was the quickest leave I'd ever seen on one of those cars. No giant wheelie, but it carried the front wheels two feet in the air for 100 ft. or more. I can close my eyes and still see the run. Then if I remember correctly, they had a problem because Dennis was going to qualify the car on Sunday so he could drive it, and she was going to drive hers, but I don't remember how they resolved it.
