427 Cougar Eliminator?

I ran into a guy last week who told me he has an original 427 Cougar Eliminator, has anyone ever seen such a car? In the area I recall seeing Boss 302, 351 4V and 428CJ ones but never a 427.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that they made 2 or 3 but don't take that as proof.

Maybe some of the Ford guys can answer this one.

As a Cougar engine, the 427 was 390 HP hydraulic cam and only available in the 1967 Cougar GT-E.
The Cougar "Eliminator" was 1969-1970 model year.

That's what I thought Jeff. [I did glance in the NHRA guide, but I've been told it is not always accurate:-)!]

Had a friend who owned a all black 428 convertible Cougar. He's still sorry he gave it away.

Back in '68 or '69, HOT ROD magazine had a feature story (and the car was splashed all over the cover of the magazine) about a 428CJ Cougar Eliminator, and this particular car had a 2-speed rear end.
I'm not making this up... I couldn't.

I don't remember the details, but it was a Ford 9-inch carrier with some kind of spur-gear arrangement at the front of the pinion, that was sort of an like an old Halibrand Quick-Change, turned around, so the driveshaft input was driving this gear arrangement which could be 1;1, or 1.3:1, or something like that.

Anyway, it was a street/strip dream, or, seemed to be. Deep gears for the strip and a 2.75:1 for the hiway, all in one third member.

I never ever saw one in person, so they must have had problems of one kind or another, and didn't produce many.

Anyone else ever see one of these?

I think that it was called a "STREEP" rear end.... no kidding (street/strip = STREEP??)

67 or 68 Ford DID make 427/ 385 horse (1-4V, hyd cam) Cougars. I used to work on a triple black one.

Cougar 427 + 390 hp hyd cam low riser heads Model was a GTE. Eliminator cam in 1969 as a Boss 302 or 428 CJ, very few GTE 427 built was later replaced by 428 CJ

1968 Cougar GTE 427/390hp, low riser heads, hyd cam, 735 Holley, only produced in 1968. They don't bring near as much as a 68 CJ Mustang . Nice cars put not much in the way of performance.

Fank Iaconio won a Cougar Eliminator for winning the Super Stock Nationals at York Dragway ....I don't reacll what year it was exactly. It was a race run over 2 or 3 days and the racer who got the most points for round wins took the title. The car was yellow with some black accents. I thought it was a 428 CJ engine. It sat out in front of Franks shop in Totowa for quite a while for sale......I always like the sequential tailights on those old Cougar's.....
