Default 727 or 904 behind Cummins in a Ram Truck

Will a Mopar 727 or 904 transmission (sb or bb bellhousing) work behind a 5.9L cummins engine?

I'm thinking the OEM application would be a 1991 or 1992 dodge pick-up.

Thanks,

Chris

Question Re: 727 or 904 behind Cummins in a Ram Truck

Chris,

I don't believe so. I have had 3 Dodge diesels, a 98, 02 and an 05. All three trans were different.

The 02 trans was a joke. Maybe someone else might know.

Question Re: 727 or 904 behind Cummins in a Ram Truck

Chris,

I beleive the 1st generation of Dodge diesels, 1989 through--??, came with Allisons. My 02 was a Chrysler (junk) product.

I am not sure of the year that the Allisons were dropped. Again, maybe someone else might shed some light.

Curt,
I with the exception of the Aisen transmissions that come in the new Dodge Cab and Chassis, I don't think any Cummins powered Dodge has ever had anything but a Mopar automatic of some sort behind it. Until the six speed automatic that is now availble, the manual was always the better choice.

Bill,

I just googled the '89 Dodge diesel pickup options. The 1st generation could be had with a manual or a 3 speed automatic. I could not find anything on what the model of the auto was.

All 3 of the Dodge's I have owned had a Mopar automatic for a transmission. As stated the 2002 trans was junk., I think only produced 1 year.

The best thing about my 2005 is fuel mileage. 22+ at 75 on the interstate! 18+ stop and go.

The bell housings are different it will have to be the 727 for a cummins. Chrysler put a 727 in the first gen cummins trucks. They didn't go to the overdrive until I think 91.

I think I would look at some of the truck pulling sites, or forums and ask them. Its pretty common for them to make 800-1200 hp with a cummins and run some sort of automatic.

If you are going to be pulling a trailer with it, I would put the 6 speed manual in it. We had one with the auto and it would not live so it got sold. bought a second with a 5 speed that kept loosing 5th gear untill it went out of warranty and I fixed it so the nut would not come loose. And one other with a 6 speed with no problems what so ever. The 5&6 speed now have over 350K and 250K on the odometers with no other problems but that POS automatic no mater what we did it would not make it more than 50K without coming apart and we could no longer afford to risk it when moving cattle so it had to go.

I'm asking the question more for fun than anything, thanks for all the replies.

We have allot of the 6BT cummins engines here at work and we were wondering what it would take to take one to put into another vehicle for street or drag racing purposes.

Personally, I think it would be cool to put one in a 63 wagon, tilt it over some and have a diesel slant six.

Chris,
To date, the Cummins has had six automatics put behind it. They are:

1) 727-Chrysler built
2) 47RH-Chrysler built-basically a 727 with an OD unit and Hydraulic Governor
3) 47RE-Chrysler built-basically a 727 with an OD unit and Electronic Governor
4) 48RE-Chrysler built-basically a 727 with an OD unit and Electronic Governor-High Torque Capacity
5) AS68RC-Built by Aisin Seiki-Six Speed-Fully Electronic-Has PTO Provision
6) 68RFE-Chrysler built-Six Speed-Fully Electronic

Starting with the 47RH, the alpha-numeric code describes the model designation:
The 4 means 4 forward gears---- a 6 means 6 forward gears
The 7 means high torque capacity-----an 8 would be the highest torque capacity
The R means rear wheel drive
The H means hydraulic control----the E means Electronic Control-----the FE means Fully Electronic Control

As already stated, the Cummins has it's own bellhousing pattern or block plate pattern-however you want to describe it. It is different than the SB and BB patterns. As already stated you could switch the block plate if you wanted to try a Ford or GM transmission.

If you are not going to use a controller, the 727 or 47RH would be your only option as they require no electronics to function.

Send me a PM if you have more questions
