Did anyone use an Edelbrock "Smokey Ram" manifold back in the old days ? Always wondered how well they worked . Saw possibilities for distribution problems and narrow power band ,just wondering how they compared with single plane or high rise .

Some tried them Chrysler had a box for the Hemis (NASCAR) as did FORD with the BOSS 429 but you hit the nail on the head about distribution and throttle response.

Under uniform acceleration, the manifold could be made to be pretty efficient. When used in constantly changing engine speed conditions (on and off the gas like a road racer) they were hard to make work. The large plenum area made it necessary to have large accelerator pump shots to cover the volume of air in the plenum. That made for inconsistent A/F mixtures and thus inefficent power levels and performance. Also, since one of the ideas behind the design was to make uniform runner length, the effective power band tended to be narrower than on single plane manifolds with a variety of runner lengths.

There is actually a thread over on Speed Talk in the forums about these intakes. It's a pretty interesting thread, if you're interested in the manifolds.

There was one sitting on a shelf in the shop I used to wrok at. It was tried by a racer running C/SM at the time when the intake first came out. Results were poor and it ened up collecting dust...
