Default How to add weight to go down one class

Hi everyone! We are in the planning process to go super stock racing (we are bracket / .90 racers) with the former Yves Perigny 69 camaro ragtop car in the Can Am stock super stock series, an excellent series in our area! One option would be to buy a 255hp 350 (several good pieces available in our area) and run in SS/JA. The question is about weight, our driver is 70 to 75 pounds heavier than Yves, so could we just add a bit more weight to move down to SS/KA, rather than being heavy for SS/JA?

Yes. Most cars are able to run three classes (exceptions: GT, SS/AH and certain other classes). The car falls into it's 'natural' class, and can add/subtract weight to move up or down a class. A car who's weight break is, say, 10.02 would fit SS/IA, and can run H and J.

Most racer put a weight box bolted to frame in trunk.
Additional weight can be bolted to frame.
See rule box for directions on mounting.

No scales at Can Am races so no heads up races . Was the car running with a BB or small block ? Iron headed BB is about 200# more than a sb you may want different springs. Do you have race prepared castings for your BB or just swap meet stuff ? You should be able to put together a reasonable cost BB especially if you have good used heads . Crate Motor is another option. I run a BB 65 Impala wagon. ---Trevor

You could also run the car in GT where the hp breaks are half. You could run the car in GT/HA that is a 11 1/2 class. Tom

Question Re: How to add weight to go down one class

Thanks all for the info! I should have joined this site a long time ago! So, when we are done, can we just go to a divisional, find out how much it weighs then pick a class most appropriate?

Sign me up for that as I would love to know how much my new car actually weighs.

Unfortunately the DSE series is finished for the year except for the banquet.

Tom! You got your new car! Good stuff! Yes DSE is finished for the year, that's where we will get the car dialed in before hitting some Can Am races.
