The recently passed Senate
Interstucture bill included funding for a pilot project "annual mileage fee program". It seems that this annual fee for miles driven could be in addition to the current State and Federal taxes currently charged on gasoline and diesel fuel. So on top of the 60-70 cents a gallon total we pay already, they could be adding more fees! It seems very clear the local and Federal government officials, want you to take mass transit, walk or bike where ever you want to go. Not everyone lives in the cities, they seem to forget that fact. No stated per mileage amount is mentioned but if this goes thru the cost to get to the races is going up!! Steve Teeter STK/SS 620 |

If the government stands to lose money they will gladly implement a federal inspection that YOU will pay for to make sure your speedo is operating in their favor. However I'm sure this is them getting ahead of the influx of electrics that pay no gas tax.

This is how the government will collect road taxes on electric vehicles. Electric vehicles don't buy fuel so they are essentially paying zero road taxes. Unfortunately, we will all be subsidizing the electric vehicle road tax.

Some may recall how the gas guzzler tax got phased out because it cost more to administer the program than they took in. Deja Vu all over again.
With GM and others goals of being 100% EV for light vehicles by 2035 I suppose they do have to come up with something but like all federal programs it will be inefficient and take lots of tweaking. Think they are well aware that rural residents will pay more than their fair share but that’s the same with the current gas tax. Probably a given that the gas tax will go up as well so the road to the races isn’t going to get any smoother. Reagan’s “seven most terrifying words” comes to mind. In the interest of being open minded I’d be curious about what Washington state members think about their pilot program.

I’m fuzzy on ELD’s for truckers but suspect the coding hackers have workarounds and knowing that many keep refreshing running gear into their pre-ECM trucks I do wonder if the program is truly effective. I go out of my way to try and help out the truckers but sure see some struggling at times, in which case I give them lots of room. Any experienced truckers have input? Yes, I know; most drivers are completely oblivious to the fact you’re trying to navigate a large beast in a sea of idiots.
