No, not a good idea, the motor will never seal properly.

Lyn,
It seems to me what you suggest is reasonable. Consider the math, if you had a "cataloged" .030 file fit ring set it would be listed as .035 A .040 "non-file fit" will be very close to the same size because of not being a file fit set it has more "out of the box" end gap. I think it is a valid consideration.

I've read that some use non file fit rings that are .005 larger than your bore size. If they give you the gap you want, then the rings will give you a better seal than rings that have been filed a lot. The article also said that different brands of rings may vary slightly, which will affect end gap.
Even if they are just a tad too big, they may only need grinding a very small amount. What the guy was saying is that the less you cut off the ring the more of a perfect circle it will make, which will provide a better seal than a ring that has had a lot taken off of it. Makes sense to me. ![]() |

Yes, depending on the actual bore size.

While you can file fit and get an acceptable gap, they may give you a higher than normal tension. Better to get the correct rings from the get go !

Don't laugh, but I put 4" top 043 ring in a 3.965 bore when they quit making that ring in that size. It ran. Doubt it was perfect.
