Default Block deck crack

Is this a dead soldier ??
Found this crack on lower right corner of #7 from water jacket across the deck into a head bolt hole.

My immediate reaction is scrap... Any thoughts on this?
Thanks, Gary

No.....

A crack extending into the cylinder would be bad.

The head bolt hole is already open to the water jacket on a stock block so the only issue is thinking about the crack getting worse or some movement that caused a head gasket to leak or fail.

I can never recall seeing one like that......

It could be repaired using the stitch weld process and an insert in the head bolt hole.....I'd probably use a stud in that hole instead of a bolt......

It is basically a matter of cost vs how valuable or irreplaceable something is....and what is the intended use of that block....

I agree. Use a stud in that position.

Welding up there at the top of the bore ? What would that do as far as bore distortion ?

Cool Re: Block deck crack

Does that crack go all the way through the deck?It might be possible to groove it, stitch weld it, then resurface the block. Wall distortion shouldn't be a problem unless an inordinate amount of heat gets applied to the block, but recheck the cylinder for roundness afterward .

I'm 99 % certain it is completely through the deck. Threads are damaged in the hole already so it needs an insert. I am a little nervous that an insert may force the crack open once loaded.

It's just a street engine 427 11:1 SRP stock crank and rods so not fancy but not looking to build a steamer either.

Thanks for the input everyone !

Gary,
If you want to spend the extra money the Loc n Stitch inserts
http://castingrepair.locknstitch.com...sh-through-fft

would be nice but in all reality a Timesert would probably be fine for a street engine. I don't think you would have to worry about decking it. With the timesert a bolt should work just as good as a stud.
