I agree with the old format of North/South divisions. I raced Modified with IHRA in '99 & they had that format. I think it worked pretty good. Seems like they lost car count at divisionals when they broke it up into the 9 divisions. At least in the less populated areas.

We heard about this over the weekend - I don't agree at all - a World Championship should be based on someones whole year performance and not their performance at one race. In my opinion it takes away a lot of the prestige of winning a World Championship, no longer who had the best season, but who had the best day at one particular race. I can respect the thought that it will give more people an opportunity to win it, but by doing this you're just lowering the standards. And when you lower the standards and you win it, it doesn't feel like as much of an accomplishment as it would have been in years past.

Yup, this rumor sounds like the NHRA Pro and Nascar "Countdown to the Championship' deals or the Summit Super series where the division champions have a run-off at the end of the season.
I think the plan behind it may be to keep an opportunity open to the very end for someone to win a national and get an "entry" into the world championship run-off so more people would keep trying until the end. But I agree with Angela & Fleming, that a World Chamionship should be based on consistent performance throughout the year as opposed to a one-race deal after you "qualify". I prefer the current system which has all season to make up for some bad luck and poor performances. What if you can't make it to the last race after qualifying? Just finishing in the top 10 currently is an accomplishment! Perhaps they should raise the year-end top 10 payouts as an incentive? There are usually some big jumps in points at the last race in Rockingham. There are too many variables beyond our control to make a chamionship be determined by a single event. As pointed out, one can simply win one national event and lose 1st round the rest of the year (or not even race unless there is a "minimum # of events" clause in the rules). But the same people will likely do well at the last race anyway. Besides, we already have 2 prestigious "shootouts": Moser and Summit. Having a good day or bad day determine a World Championship is probably the best argument against this system. It fits the Summit Super series because it's for the local, weekend racers who don't travel around the country. It doesn't fit the sportsman who travel and do race against other racers from around the country already. I hope it's just a "rumor" or it can still be reconsidered. I guess we'll know after the banquet.

I wonder why they have nine divisions? Seven is not enough?
Like the Excursion. think Ford looked at the Suburban and said "Not big enough"? ![]() I like running IHRA races, Same rules, same cars, etc. The officials I have met are very friendly, but I wonder about some of the things the higher-ups do.

Have you guys forgotten when NHRA World Champs were decide by the winner of the last race of the year called the world finals? AND they only took the top points earners from the 5 points races in each division from each elim. to run for the Championship and they had to qualify when they got there at the finals and that became the new record to run off of for that race and the following year until someone set it lower..

It's more than a rumor. It's a done deal from what I understand. There will also be several ways to enter the shootout. There could be 25+ cars in the runoff for each class.
I don't like it. Chip Johnson |
