BAS,
Where did you get your info about not paying 3-10th? To answer that for you you don't know it's just pure speculation on your part.

Man, this is a lot to think about. I agree that somebody at IHRA is watching this. I guess whatever it takes to keep a place to race is somewhat positive. However, I am not sure that a championship should be determined at one race. That is what the shootouts are for. Maybe they could do both, that would sure keep the car counts up.
Here is my idea:

Keep the current points structure, for those who can and want to do that. Then, they could have a special shootout for any race winner, divisional and national at the last race of the year. Maybe throw in all of the divisional champions, and call it the champion shootout. Too pay for this, they could charge a fee at the beginning of the year to register for this, again for those who can and want to do this. Or, maybe get a large company, like Jegs or Summit to pay for some of it. If they can't and the racers have to pay, so be it. If it cost $100 at the beginning of the season to get in this race, you do the math the payout COULD be very large. Large enough to keep us all coming back to try to get in. After all, it is the racers choice to go racing. I believe in stock alone, you could get probably around 100 cars to do this. That would be a one race shootout for $10,000 or they could split it up some. The key is that they would have to make people pay for this before their first race, or the only people that would put up money would be those who qualified. I know that some may complain about this idea, you can't please everyone. This is just my idea on how to keep the current structure and provide a shootout that together would keep the car count high. Any comments?

Jim Reynolds and I were talking today and he came up w/ the best idea I've heard yet...leave the points system the way it is and increase the payout! If you increase it enough you will have a lot more racers trying to hit IHRA races. Think about it, we are running for the same money we raced for in the '80's when the entry fee was something like $40 and gas for the truck was $1 or less per gallon. This past season was probably not the best season to base this kind of change in points structure on as many people had to reduce their racing due to the current economic conditions along w/ the fuel cost. I'm sure IHRA has already considered all of this though!

I don't know for sure. But how would they figure out who is 3rd - 10th? Best losing package in the semis gets 3rd the other semi finalist is 4th? Again with 1/4 finalist? That gets ya to 8th place anyway. This thread is based speculation/rumors.

The only way to make any headway into bigger payouts is to get into ihra's (and nhra's) books to see what their real bottom line/outlay is.If they have extra loot to increase payouts it would be right out there to see.But do you think either would agree to openness like that?I think you would have a better chance of catching Ben Laden.

Ed F.

I'm sorry that my budget didn't include enought to go to Pittsburgh and Sky View.I really enjoyed IHRA in 2007.

As stupid as this whole idea sounds, if they run edmonton again this year you can bet there will be a HUGE increase in turnout.

If this is for real, and there is a race in Edmonton, i'll be there!

I guess I am a traditionalist and dont like change... I am like you chipster, I would rather win races than championships $$$$$$$$$. Heck I have only ran a handfull of "organized" stuff...

And I do agree that after thinking about it, people will still show..

I can see how this will generate more local turnout, which is good for business (IHRA & Local track owners). Now the local racer who never travels has his one shot at the fame and glory of calling himself the world champion.

For those who are saying they aren't attending the events anymore the bottom line is they don't care.

The traveling pros or semi pros are what scares away many of the local racers. Not many want to jump in against the Dan Fletcher's, Biondo's and Bertozzi's. Heck those guys don't even have to worry about showing up to many of the races far away now but, they still will.

Another example is by looking at the turnouts the friday night test and tunes bring out. Most same racers don't want to get involved with the bracket program on Sat's and Sun's. I can assure you that the IHRA and track owners have posed the question at their tracks long ago and received the responses of the local racers that is positive.

It is fairly sad to see 11 super stockers at an IHRA national event but, my thinking is if I can win the same money or near against 11(less rounds and less punishment on your parts) then why race against 100 (NHRA). In the end Chip has it right. It's about the wins/money.

Answer this one question NHRA racers. Why pay more for your chances to be 1,000,000 to 1 when you can pay the same or less price (IHRA) and have your chances be at 10-1 with near the same payout???

The purpose behind the 3 out 5 nationals or 6 out of 8 divisionals is so that you dont have to spend a gazillion dollars to chase a championship!

DID YOU KNOW?

That only 23 Racers IHRA WIDE went to 5 Nationals ans 8 Divisionals. Its not about money, its about giving a racer a shot that only goes to 3 or 4 nationals a year. I have a stocke and a super stocker to race next year as my brother and I are still out on a decision on this but why have you guys not been claiming out? Just curious.

And how many of you would have went to Kinston NC, that didnt go at the end of the year because you couldnt win the championship anymore. He lost his ***** on that race with only 150ish cars.
