Travis - great nugget of Stocker history.

This will kill a couple of hours this morning. And I just killed about an hour watching first round of Stock from Maple Grove!

Hi Mike,

I still haven't used those converters. Too many OTHER combos to play with.

I hate to burst those guys bubbles on Travis' link, but Junior Stock had nothing to do with HEADS-UP racing. There was heads-up racing because until at least 1970, we had to win class at our track just to compete in Eliminations. But there was no "official" Jr. Stock anything. It was a magazine re-enforced state of mind at the time that dealt with the older combinations that weren't like the factory backed big-inch Muscle Cars of then recent years.

Interesting though. Thanks Travis.

Jerry,
Back in the late 60's in Jersey, Englishtown, Island, Atco etc. split stock into Top Stock (A/S to F/S - stick and auto) and Junior Stock ( G/S and down) for their weekly races. I don't think it was ever incorporated into any NHRA events, but I could be wrong.

Guys, I wanted to mention this site on here, but I have to warn you ,these guys are very strict on their rules and policies for new members. Please read their rules before making a post.
I was banned, right off the bat a few years ago, for promoting my S/SS /Nostalgia race in my first post.

Now,I'm sure some of you could contribute a bunch to it.

The beginning of Jr Stock came about in 1964 and officially continued through 1966. Although the '64-'66 rulebooks listed all Stock classes under one banner, at National events the class was split into two eliminators, Top Stock and Junior Stock. Top Stock consisted of S/S, S/SA, A/S, and A/SA. Junior Stock was from B/S and B/SA down. It must be remembered that S/S and S/SA in those years were the top classes in Stock eliminator. Junior Stock winners at Indy were Phil Chisholm 1964, Jon Callender 1965, and Dave Kempton 1966.

1967 saw NHRA give S/S its own eliminator with ten classes. That meant Stock eliminator at National events was no longer split apart. However the name Junior Stock stuck with the racers and it was unofficially called that until 1972 when Stock and S/S classes drastically changed.

Unlike today's Junior Stock where all cars are run heads up on an 11.00 lb weight break, the old Junior Stock was only heads up to during class eliminations. Class winners were then dialed off their class National record and the eliminator used a handicap system with a breakout.

Travis,

Thanks a bunch for the history lesson and for clearing up the misconceptions. It wasn't that complicated, but some of that was forty years ago, and I've slept since then!

I really DO appreciate the refresher course!!!
