As long as fouls don't count in qualifying, the driver of the faster car can just leave any time he wants after the other green. For example, if I were trying to qualify the hypothetical SS/AM car, I wouldn't want to be sitting on the line for an extra five seconds for a meaningless 'race' with your SS/GS car, getting hotter and killing my ET.
To make qualifying more interesting, pair the cars closely by index, in reverse order, slowest to fastest. The spectators will know that the cars will keep getting faster as the session progresses and they will want to stay in their seats to the end so they don't miss the most exciting cars. Also, post a bounty for low ET of each session and track the best time on the scoreboard.
