Smith "Doubles Up" at Sportsman Circuit Shootout at the Grov

The Mid Atlantic .90 Association took over Maple Grove Raceway this past weekend for Races 3 and 4 of their 2014 season. After a rain shower on Friday, the gates opened on Saturday morning to sunny skies. Saturday's Race #3 got into Round 3 before the cool temperatures pushed the remaining rounds to early Sunday morning. In the end it was Johnny Smith pulling the double up and sweeping both events in MASCA.

Local runner Don Mattson took his A-1 Mulch Miller Dragster to the#1 qualifying spot in Race #3. Mattson was followed by Dave Long, Jeff Livezey Jr., and Rich Dorr. In the end though it was number eighteen qualifier Smith from Poughkeepsie, NY who took his 2009 Undercover dragster to the winners circle. Smith took down Mattson in the first round and then received a bye run in the second round. Smith then took down Tony Barnett, Debbie Moses, and then had yet another bye before matching up against Maple Grove local Kevin Scholl in the finals. In the finals, Smith took a slight advantage at the tree (.015 to .034) and led the whole way down the track with an 8.911 to 8.939 victory.

On Sunday racers were greeted with sunny skies and after finishing up Race #3 the series got into Race # 4. In MASCA action, Smith continued to hold the hot hand as he worked his way through the field. In the finals Smith took down current points leader Dave Long and his Long Family dragster. Smith took the advantage at the tree (.031 to .043) and parlayed that into an 8.916 to 8.957 victory and the double up.

The Mid-Atlantic .90 Association will take a few weeks off before hitting Cecil County Dragway in Rising Sun, MD on June 28th & 29th for the Mid-Summer Showdown. This will be the last two events for racers to qualify for the Autometer Top 8 Shootout presented by Nitroplate, Silfies Automotive, and S&W Race Cars.
