Chevy oil filter adapter
Recent thread here dealt with the engine that ate a wire snap ring and it cut a main bearing pretty badly and obviously went through the oil pump. Mention was made about blocking off the oil filter bypass valve in the filter adapter. How are you guys doing that,or does our burgeoning aftermarket parts industry manufacture such a unit for '68 up blocks, and '67 on back small journal engines? I have plenty of both in my garage and store room.
As far as past history goes, in the mid '70's, I worked as a mechanic in a Chevy dealer,and a 66-67 SS396 4 speed Chevelle came in on the hook-no oil pressure. To complicate matters, it had a scatter shield,headers,and was are beast to work on. The engine had to come out to pull the pan. Inside the pan was at least a dozen wire ring lifter snap rings. Also, the pump and pickup were broken off the rear cap and laying in the sump of the pan. The customer was lucky and shut the engine off in time not to damage it. Pump was locked up solid. Service writer didn't want to take the time to sell the customer a correct job and fix it right, so we put a pump,pickup,and intermediate shaft in it, cleaned out and reinstalled the pan, fired it up, it had pressure and they let it go. It should have had a set of lifters,push rods and valve springs replaced in it as well.Nothing like good customer service and taking the time to do it right. That's why I haven't worked on cars for the public since 1980.
