Pre-assemble with the pistons, rods and bearings you will be running. I just did this with a Dart SHP sbf. I used a dial gauge and double checked it with a bar bolted across the cylinder and a feeler gauge. Swinging the gauge from the piston to the deck can be tricky. The two measurments differed by .005. If the mains need to be honed have that done first. The align hone may slightly adjust the relationship between the piston and deck.


On line engine calculators indicated that my deck clearance would be .010 but it measured .015. Measure (twice).



After everything is machined do a full assembly and run the clay test to verify your piston to valve clearance.
