Man, that was great!! Thank you!!
I was there with my C/SM '69 Camaro. Lost a clutch, didn't even make 1st round. That car broke stuff until it broke me. Does anybody know if Pete Smith is still with us? He was another one of my favorite racers. Very nice guy.

Ed,
Heard he is living somewhere around the Conroe area. The Emmons Brothers know for sure. |

Good to hear Todd. Thanks. Good driver, good guy. Pete sure didn't mind zinging that thing up on the starting line. I loved watching him and several others.

ESPN should take a look at those videos. More exciting than watching pro stock today...dave doing the commentary..the way it was filmed made them look like they were going faster than they were and it was really fun to watch....I don't get it with them not airing sportsman shows today but i guess when you watch them now they make them look boring.....man did they put on a show back then...too bad I was too young and missed all the fun.

Pete was hard on the motors but that's what it took to run the numbers. If I remember correctly, he left the line a little over 11 grand, might have even been close to twelve. Hell, I was in the car while he was checking the timing and it zinged to almost 10,000 on that big Moroso tach. I had Fresh underwear after that.

The tattle tail on his tach was up around 11000 every time I looked at it. Hard to stand by the starting line and watch some of those guys make a pass without grinning like a fool. Very cool.

I owe my racing S/SS to these guys racing these cars and to the track owners of yesterday that allowed us teenagers to stand right behind or next to these cars as they staged and launched (damn insurance companies took all the fun away!). Watching the Knobloch - Yancer - Faulkner '63 Vette with one of those high windin' SBC and a stick and the tach clearly visible from the rear window pegged at 11K or more. That's what got the blood moving and made me want my own someday. My engines are now built by Bud Yancer of MACH Development. Yep, same guy!
