John's son is also named John....His son was definitely driving in stock....I raced him in time trials , it was his first race and he did well driving the car. John Calvert is one of the most honest and fair racers I have ever met in te last 20 years. Anything that was done at the race was certainly done by direct request to Mike Rice the Division Director! There was plenty of time at the race to have anyone approach either of these gentleman...they were easy to find. Everyone who raced Stock/SS was aware of the Ladder Changes and guess what: we all could of cared less! For anything that happens at a Div.7 race, the Division Director has the final say. I am sure Mike Rice would be happy to explain the circumstances to you if you call. He has been always easy for me to contact. As a racer I don't get paid to interpret the rules, so If I have a question on what we can or can not do.....I ask the Division Director and what he says GOES. John Irving

I talked to John and this is what he told me. After the record run, with the cobra jet the next pass the car started to slow down.after checking the oil filter and finding bad things he with drew from super stock.His son told him to run the thunder bolt.His son with drew from stock sat. A.M. John re entered super stock with the thunder bolt and made a qualifying run sat. afternoon. This all went through MIKE RICE div.7 dir.

This process isn't too unusual. At a div race, my brother had to go home for a family emergency. I was able to run the car at the approval of the Div 3 director. Joe had to withdraw, I entered. I had one qualifying run left that I could make to qualify with the field and did so. Joe did not get points or a grade point I did in that case.

Some stuff can be cleared up with an e mail not the court of public opinion. I don't know Calvert personally, but I am pretty sure he is easy to get ahold of if you really want to know something.

Not defending NHRA's process for their other problems at the top, but it doesn't appear as if there was a conspiracy theory in this case.

Its people nature to bitch about this stuff on the internet as its easier than finding out the real truth.

As for the whellie bars, why not get a picture of that one and send it to everyone either you get yours or his gets taken away.

Wheelie Bars need to be addressed, if Bruce approved them why are they not legal in div 3? There are a bunch of cars using them so whats the deal, I have not seen any announcement saying they are not legal.

Here are some pictures of the Fairlane at Pomona. I wish I had a better shot of how the bars are attached, but they float on their mountings and look to act as a lever and push down on the axle.
