It appears to me that This will severely restrict our racing in this part of the world. (Sourthern Utah) All races generally take us through NV.
With the current economic conditons it makes it very hard to attend races in CA, AZ, NV, ID WA and OR. It just adds one more nail in the coffin for our racing program. It would be nice if the NHRA would get involved and get some sort of excemption like they did for the Air Races etc. Just my thoughts |

My thoughts also E Snow! Rather than hammering the racers for waste desposal NHRA should be leading the way to help the racer be as green as possible. Instead they take the route to cover their backsides and add an additional burden to the racer. I thought NHRA was form to provide a safe and racer friendly place to compete? What was I thinking? |

I just spoke to a SS racer on his way to Vegas. He had a long talk w/ NVDMV before he hit the road. He was told "if you have ever made money w/ your car or COULD make money w/ your car, it was considered commercial. Furthermore, not only is it .15 per mile, it's $50.00 per day you are in NV using the permit! SS racer told the agent he was traveling to a car show, not a race. Agent informed SS racer there was money in showing cars as agent used to show a roadster and knew the kind of money that could ne MADD and therefore could be considered commercial. SS racer assured agent this was not possible with his car.
Agent went over a lengthy list to which racer responded "no" to all questions. Agent stated if he answered the same to an officer, everything should be OK. The fine if DPS doesn't buy your story? $500 to $1000 (I believe per day,could be wrong) & possible impound. NHRA needs to lobby an exemption. We're talkinganother $300+ for a week long race!

The way I see it is BOTH the NHRA AND Bruton Smith/The Strip as well as the other NHRA sanctioned strips need to contact the proper authorities in Nevada and see if they can work out an exemption or some kind of a fair and equitable solution to the situation. If the Nevada govt people do not want to cooperate then the NHRA and Mr Smith have to make it CRYSTAL CLEAR so that is totaly understood that there will be no more NHRA races in their state until this ruling is rescinded---When they see the financial ramifications that will ensue they just might rethink their logic. Thinking about this a little more___I think Bruton can carry an awfully big stick here he not only owns the Strip but he has a Nascar track there too---They just might listen to him the folks in N carolina sure had no problems hearing him--Comp 387

One thing I left out of my earlier post about the racers traveling into Nevada was an example LeAnn with the Nevada Department of Transportation License and Permit Division gave me about U-Haul Truck and Trailers.
LeAnn gave me the example of someone renting a U-Haul Truck or Trailer or both and traveling through Nevada while moving. She used as an example of moving into Nevada with the U-Haul as OK since you were moving into the state. You would have to provide an address you were moving to in Nevada if stopped. She said if you were only traveling through Nevada and Not Moving to Nevada you would need the travel and fuel permit to travel through Nevada with the U-Haul rig. That did not seem right to me and I did not include that in the post earlier about the racers permits as it would not be relevant to a racers issue. I did think it was a little out there and will cause a lot of people problems and give Nevada a black eye as people do talk about how they are treated in places as they travel. Nevada may not care as they need $$$$$ as all the states do and want to collect those dollars from outsiders if possible. Just Reporting What Info I Received Rick Cates |

The Nevada people obviously have not read the law on money. It's quite clear and most field people are ignorant of the DOT regulations and they have probably never been challenged. They get a few classroom classes about big rigs (which is what they should enforce). I suggest you get a manual (it's cheap) and outline the section that applies to us and have it with you for all states. Best protection you can have. I can assure you when you pull out that large manual, show them the law, and tell them you feel you are being coerced and request their superior to come to the scene, there is probably a different story. Never never agree that you are a commercial vehicle, because by definition you are not, and the exemption in the manual allows you to do what you do even if you are a commercial motor vehicle.

Jeff, what is the name of the Manual you reference and where do I get one.
The problem when you get stopped you can very easily piss off the officer when asking for his supervisor and they can always find something if they want to. Getting the book out and having a friendly conversation with the officer might not be to bad. It all depends on the officer. Nevada I believe is a different issue. It is a state looking for revenue any way they can get it from outsiders. The U-Haul deal was a thing I would think could not be enforced at all if pushed into the courts. Nevada does not have ports of entry's so they are trying to enforce the laws and collect fees across the state without the expense of the ports and get it done electronically and make fast easy money. I usually go to the spring Las Vegas race but this year family issues did not allow. I do plan to go to the fall race and on to Pamona so I hope this gets straightened out by the fall.
