Speaking of Class Eliminations, has anybody heard "Officially" what the deal for winning class on a single is now that NHRA reduced all the Stock & S/S indexs 3 tenths.A few years back, they required a single car class winner to run at least 5 tenths under the old indexs. (As I understand it, for 2 or more cars, this 1/2 second under was not required, if the winner of a pair was 1 tenth under, and the 2nd car was slower, or redlite, that was acceptable).

Now with the lower indexes, is this 5 tenth under rule over with (on a single), or does a car need to run 8 tenths under the old indexes? Anybody "won" class on a single at less than 5 tenths under at a NHRA National event in 2010 yet? The NHRA website doesn`t seem to have any info on this issue.

Yes, I'm new. I'm trying to learn but I'm starting to think this stuff is deliberately opaque.

The "Eliminator" pairs all qualified cars of different classes (up to the limit of how many cars are allowed to run the Eliminator) to race "for the money," the purse that is awarded for a "Stock Eliminator win." There are handicapped starts based on each car's "dial-in" to allow for different cars' performance potential. The majority of NHRA national events will have 7 rounds of this type of racing, to determine who is the "Stock Eliminator" champ for that event.

Class Eliminations are different in that it is contested by only pairing cars that are in the same class, and running them "heads-up/no breakout" (first car to the finish line wins, period) to determine who has the quickest car/driver combination in that class. No handicaps are used for Class racing. It might be the last vestige of pure drag racing left in NHRA Sportsman racing.

Hope this clears up the difference in "Class Racing" and racing in "The Eliminator.

What kind of turnout do they usually get for that?

If I follow then, a regular "stock eliminator" race will qualify 128 cars and put them in a ladder?

Not all races allow 128 cars. Some are much less. It makes no sense to me but thats the way nhra does it. You would think they would like full fields but they must be making enough money in Glendora.

Travis or somebody may post something more authoratative and I seem to remember anything under the index wins a single car class but if you look at Bristol's class winners there were several singles for class that couldn't run under by very much. Bristol in the summer can be really slow.

On a single a run on the index will get you the wally and the class win.
