Jeff,
It is my understanding that what you need for your pit vehicle is liability insurance incase you run into someone or something. And you should be able to get a rider from your auto insurance to cover that need. But yes you will have to prove you have such insurance for your pit vehicle and they will then give (sell?) you a sticker to place on your pit vehicle.

I have two golf carts--pay about $75 a year for the two--carry the proof of insurance--never been checked--I run a half dozen national events a year--still carry the proof, in case.

Isn't that always the case. If you do the right thing, no one cares. But don't have what you need, and watch what happens.

I am an insurance agent, I know worse than lawyers, lol.
Anyway, I have progressive insurance on my golf cart. It was noted on here that home owners or auto policies may cover it, look very closely, usually home owners does cover golf carts BUT only on your property! Your coverage may vary but this is usually the case, thus golf cart insurance may be needed. It is very inexpesive and if something happens it will be very much worth it! Bottom line, yes you do need your pit vehicle covered with liability insurance of some sort, I think it is at least a 100K limit?
