The reason I would not build a crate motor car where you live is MONEY. Unless you have one the lottery you can't compete against those UNDERATED MOPARS. You can't hide from them either because they run nearly every class.

in IHRA the 250 is 140hp & the 230 is 135 hp Mark.....that being said the 250 crank is a good 18Lbs heavier!!!!! THE 250 WILL NOT RUN WITH THE 230 EVEN @ THE SAME WEIGHT! All the pistons that are approved for the 283 are also approved for the 230 ....the 250 has like 3 pistons to chose from....Now then what money do you want to spend???? I can tell you what to buy ....but it's not a cheap combo (if you want to go fast....it you want to run the index VERY cheap)

You're right Mark. I see NHRA still has the '68 250 rated at 155 HP.
My '73 is only rated at 145 and I assumed that would be accross the board. In that case, yes the 230 would be a much better choice. IHRA has only a 5 HP difference between the two motors. And Billy's right about he'd like to see it with a 4 speed. When I changed my '69 Nova from an automatic to a stick, it picked up .5ths & a little over 2 MPH. And that was going to a 3 speed manual. The Camaro is allowed a 4 speed.

Why do people claim crate engines are cheaper? Don't they require the same building protocol as a regular stocker engine or aren't you allowed to touch them up? I realize some of the regular stocker castings can get spendy but where else is the savings?
