Exactly right!! I sell core heads and find only about one out of ten not cracked. Seen first time they overhead ......they crack. Most of time you can see evidence of leakage by eye. A lot of 587 Heads are almost as bad.

Chris, with all the pitfalls listed here have you considered buying a crate motor from Carolina Machine, ATI, etc? Or simply find a good block, buy a stroker kit and Alum heads? First option being a tad more expensive but warranty might make it more attractive.
