I just got an e-mail from one of my "old racer buds" and he wants me to post a combo that he says we "missed".
82-84 Camaro/Firebird 173/135 Yeah it's small and it's a 2v but what a 2v! 800 Q-jet cut in half with 1 pri and 1 sec means 400 cfm no matter how you flow it. Real nice cylinder head with biggish valves for a little motor (1.60/1.30). .347/.394 cam, not a lot of compression 200 turbo This one would test your scrounging skills and our budget but I think it could be done cheap to run under the index and built up on as funds come up. There is one of these "screaming" around D-2 so they will go fast. I think the key to doing this one on our budget is to find a Dana-44 "GM Service Package" bolt in rear. I've bought and sold a couple of them and the most I've paid for one is $100 (but good luck!). Don't confuse them with the "australian" rear, these look like a Dana. Parts are available right to maybe squeak it under our budget cap.

That's a great FWD combination, available from 1980-1985 in a standard version and a high perf version with bigger valves, better heads and more camshaft. Joe Moore raced a Citation way back when in the elate '80s, and ran fast easily even then. These engines also were available in the 1982-1984 Firebirds. The high perf engine was available in 1983-84 Firebird SEs with a 5-speed.

The HO heads came with a factory 4 angle valve job. That was always fun in teardown. I always thought it would run in a RWD car with real gears and converter. ![]()

I sold it to Ron Jeffries from Fla. He gave be some cash, his Gators winning Firebird for collateral, and promised to make payments on the balance. He made a few, then disappeared off the face of the earth. I sold off the stuff I had and got the rest of my money that way. I think he was working on an oil rig in La. at the time . It's probably rusted away down to nothing down in The Bayou somewhere.
If I ever find it , I'll go and pick it up...I still have the title!

A FWD killer combo with this engine is the 1986 Cadillac Cimmaron - PFI, all the HO stuff and 130 hp.

Has the '66 full-size Ford with the 240 inline six ever been considered? It has some appealing specs, I think.
150 HP factor (OEM gross rating,) 1.787"/1.566" valves, long rod motor (6.7",) 12 port head, cam specs: .366/.400 lift, and fits the V Stock class (24# pounds per horsepower,) almost perfectly. It comes with the all synchro 3-speed manual, or a C-4. Dunno if it has the 9" or an 8" rear; probably the latter. Dunno about that 1-bbl carb, though. Might be difficult to find, but should be an easy (and cheap) build.
