There appears to be a chrome appearing ring in this one. His could be painted black and not show up in the pic.

He's probably a closet bowtie fan and wanted the grill to look more like a 69 camaro. I don't blame him.

That's correct; the stock grille has a rectangular chome "section" inside the outer trim piece and the snake mounts inside it on the driver's side.
