361/305 HP and 383/343 HP Confusion,,,,,,,,,
Let me try to explain the Dave Kempton and Doug Kahl class confusion. NHRA Classes; 1963/1964/1965 C/SA Weight Factor was (10.60 - 11.29 Wt/Hp) The 1962 Plymouth Sport Fury and 1962 Dodge Polara 500 with the 361/305 HP engine combination fell into C/SA. Both Doug Kahl (1965 World Champion) and Dave Kempton (1965 Winternationals Junior Stock Champion) campaigned in C/SA with the 361/305 HP 1962 Sport Fury's. They had also run this combination in 1963 and 1964. In 1966, the NHRA bumped up the classes 'one-notch', and C/SA was now D/SA, and B/SA was now C/SA. Both Doug Kahl and Dave Kempton switched to the 383/343 HP engine combination, after the 1966 Winternationals.... At the 66' Winternationals, they both ran the 361/305 HP combination, but in the 'New' D/SA Class They were running the 383/343 HP combination at the 66' Springnationals. In 1966, they were classed in C/SA, but the weight factor of the class was 9.50 - 10.59 Wt/Hp. What confuses everyone is the C/SA Class. They both kept the same cars, but switched from the 361/305 HP engine to the 383/343 HP engine in 1966. They were still running C/SA in 1966, but the weight factors had changed. pc Last edited by Paul Ceasrine; 01-05-2012 at 10:30 PM. |
