Wow thanks for the information.
Yes please send the indexes. My G Pure Stocker index under NHRA would be 13.75. About where Q/SA would be. Wanted to see if they changed much over the years. Do know HP changed back and forth. |

Here's the index as of March 1979. I also have a 1977 rule book, came from Dick Butler's shop. Tod got it for me last year. Rules then were pretty much what IHRA Pure Stock is today, with some exception maybe. Another wrinkle to the old system, Maybe those with better memories than myself can confirm this. Occasionally, someone would set a record for a lower class. Causing some havoc forcing a lower class to spot a higher class. I may be wrong on this? I do know it has happened under the present system but the index nulled it for other cars in the class.

In 1972 NHRA added the Stockers to Super Stock and expended the classes down to SS/U. In December 1971 I did the 9" tire test for Firestone at Gainesville with my SS/GA Mustang. I never expected to hook up with the 9" tire but to my surprise I went quicker on the 9" over the 11.5" Firestone.

Today I met the famous Tom Gould of Corvair fame.
Just got to Darlington after driving 8 hours. He is one of the unsung heros of Stock Eliminator. His car stil runs under the index with a stock cam. What a beautiful car he has too. We need to rediscover our roots and brag about a bit of our past.. Tom is in super shape..too..hope to be as fit as him when I hit 21 again ![]() D Last edited by Dan Fahey; 08-30-2013 at 09:50 PM. |

In 1975 Z/SA index was 17.36 and 25lb/hp 6 Cyl allowed. I could run high 16's with my 65 Valiant 170 cid. Still have the car and engine. Just waiting for NHRA to allow the combo back into Z/SA

Dan,
Appreciate the kind words. Actually, the cam is a Lunati "pure stock" grind. It's been in there every since I built the engine in 1976. I won the X/S class at the 1976 NHRA Summernationals set the NHRA X/ Stock record in 1977, and then the car pretty much sat until I retired in 1996. I ran IHRA Pure Stock in 1997-98 until they dropped the lower Pure Stock classes in 1999. |

Heard Bobby Warren was trying to race again. There were 7 Pure Stockers at Darlington. Technically you would have made it 8. I loved every minute of your conversation and the historical documents you showed me. Did very poorly losing both first rounds. Need more seat time. One of these days it will all come around. Looking forward to meeting up with you again. Stay thirsty! D |
